I can't help anyone because I feel like I haven't figured any of this out. Nava is 6 weeks old today and isn't on any schedule. This isn't the 6-week growth spurt because she hasn't been on one yet. During the day, she is pretty much sleeping or nursing the whole time. She has very little time awake where she is calm and willing to play or interact without a boob in her mouth. At night, we instituted a night-time routine a few weeks ago around 7-8PM she nurses, gets a bath, nurses again and goes down (that last part is often a LONG process of soothing but usually works possibly by 10PM). Tuesday night she woke up ever 2 - 2.5 hours to eat all night. Last night she slept for over 6 hours straight - for the first time ever. During the day she takes about 1-2 long naps (over 2 hrs) but stays up for a number of hours in between regardless of how much quiet soothing we do.
I think she (and I) would benefit from a real schedule but I am not sure how to get her on one and I am not sure what is appropriate to do at her age. We have a lot of friends who have used Weisbluth's "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child". Does anyone have thoughts on it? Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Oh I know exactly how you feel. Brenna is 10 weeks tomorrow and it's only in the last few weeks that she's started to feel like something besides a crying, pooping, eating machine. Now she is able to just chill out while awake sometimes. And she smiles and interacts with toys and stuff. But at six weeks it was so frustrating because it seemed like all I did was try to keep her from being fussy all the time. Not that we're not still doing that sometimes. As far as schedule goes though, I haven't had any luck getting her on a strict schedule. Do you use a swaddle and pacifier? I don't know what we'd do without those.
